NPCI Unveils FiMI, a Compact AI Model for Retail Banking

The model is designed around Indian retail-banking workflows, with benchmarks intended to support safer evaluation of banking AI.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) unveiled FiMI Banking at Global Fintech Fest 2026, positioning it as a compact AI model designed for Indian retail-banking use cases. NPCI said it would work with HDFC Bank to further develop the model and make relevant benchmarks and evaluation material available to the ecosystem.

Banking AI must operate within demanding requirements for accuracy, security, customer protection and regulatory compliance. A model tuned for banking workflows could help institutions evaluate how AI handles financial terminology, customer queries and common operational tasks.

The announcement also points to the importance of evaluation. Financial institutions need ways to test not only whether a model produces fluent responses, but whether it follows instructions, avoids unsafe actions, protects sensitive information and escalates uncertain cases appropriately.

Any deployment will still require institution-specific controls, testing and human oversight, especially for decisions that affect customer funds or access to financial products.

BFSI NXT perspective: Banking AI needs more than a general-purpose model. It needs domain knowledge, robust evaluation and clear operational boundaries.
