The wallet explores how AI agents could help users complete selected payment journeys while keeping authentication and user permissions central.
Amazon Pay introduced Smart Wallet at Global Fintech Fest 2026, positioning the product around the use of AI agents in payment journeys. Launch coverage said the initial use case included UPI payments for flight-ticket booking, alongside biometric authentication and offline tap-to-pay capabilities.
The concept signals a shift from wallets that simply store payment methods towards interfaces that can help users complete tasks. In an agentic payment journey, the system may help select or initiate an eligible transaction based on user instructions and configured permissions.
Any such experience needs strong controls around consent, spending limits, confirmation and transaction records. Users should be able to understand what the agent is authorised to do, review the payment details and stop or revoke permissions when required.
Expansion into additional merchants and use cases will depend on availability and the operating rules of the service.
BFSI NXT perspective: AI can simplify payment journeys, but user control and clear authorisation must remain non-negotiable.
