Cloud adoption can improve agility, but regulated financial institutions must understand concentration risk, data responsibilities and exit options.
Cloud is an operating-model decision
Cloud can help institutions scale capacity, modernise applications and speed up development. But moving workloads is not the same as transforming operations. Institutions need a clear view of which services belong where, what risks are acceptable and how outcomes will be measured.
Classify workloads before migration
Criticality, sensitivity, latency, integration complexity and recovery requirements should shape placement decisions. A workload map helps leaders identify dependencies and define controls before migration rather than discovering them during an incident.
Manage concentration and third-party risk
Financial institutions should understand provider dependencies, subcontractors, service commitments, incident notification arrangements and the practical ability to move workloads. Exit planning should be tested and maintained, not left as a clause in a contract.
Secure the configuration and identity layer
Access management, least privilege, encryption, logging, configuration monitoring and secure development practices need consistent ownership across environments. Responsibility is shared between the institution and its providers; it should never be assumed away.
Design recovery from the start
Backups, recovery time objectives, recovery point objectives and restoration procedures should be tested against realistic scenarios. Resilience includes people, data, applications, connectivity and decision-making—not infrastructure alone.
The leadership takeaway
A strong BFSI cloud strategy balances speed with control, portability and tested recovery—so modernisation does not create hidden dependencies.
